Barbara Rees Holiday letter.
Hand on the great pyramid of Giza
Yes, you can see them from Cairo but it's always 'foggy'!
Learned a lot about Cleopatra's Needle in Paris.
I always thought the French just showed up one day, decided they wanted it and took it.
This is where it came from. The entrance to the temple of Karnak
There was one on each side. They took the one from the right.
It was not stolen. They traded it for a clock!
The clock quit working on the ship bringing it. It's been right twice a day ever since.
Cleopatra's needle was installed in place of the Guillotine from the Louis XVI revolution.
They also changed the name of the plaza from the Place de la Revolution to the Place de la Concorde to try and help stave off anymore revolutions.
Sphinx Ave. at the Karnak temple. 1+ mile - 1050 Sphinxes!
Everything is a hustle. Either to sell you something or find a way to make you give a tip. Gets quite tiring.
They even lasso the moving river boats and throw stuff on deck, hoping you'll buy something.
Abu Semple is worth the $350 to see it. 100 degrees and got sick that afternoon. (Covid/Ramses revenge)
The one head fell off during an earthquake and they were quite torn whether to keep it like they found it or fix it when they moved it.
There's another one next to it for Isis.
This is where they had to move it from when they built the dam. Not far 1/4 - 1/2 mile? (click to animate)
More hieroglyphics than you can shake a stick at.
Lost my mind and bought this. 32" x 72" on papyrus. Now I have to make a frame for it!
Must have been the fever.
For those of you who do projects. Ever get one almost finished and then something goes wrong?
Ever have it happen with a project THIS big?
